Followers is a Creepy Word

** I know that I’ve written a post similar to this one but this one is a bit deeper.**

There’s a struggle rapper named Retch on Instagram telling his “followers” to play Russian Roulette, pop lots of pills and overdose. They are doing it.

fol·low·er
/ˈfälōər/
noun
plural noun: followers
1.
an adherent or devotee of a particular person, cause, or activity.
2.
a person who moves or travels behind someone or something.
I use the term supporter, look up the root word support. Support has a lot of meanings but there’s one definition that sticks out the most. “A source of comfort or encouragement.”

There’s been times that I have been so low that I wanted to end the blog altogether. Before I would delete it, someone would comment with the sweetest comment. Afterwards, I would reconsider and write another post. I wouldn’t consider that person or any person that takes the time to (respectfully) comment  on something that may not affect them as a follower. As I said in the previous post, the term follower reminds me of a cult.
Why are you taking it so seriously Jess?
I just don’t feel comfortable, it makes me feel sick to my stomach when I use it in everyday talk with friends or family. I would rather use the term subscribers. How do you guys feel about the term follower?

  1. My wife and I had a discussion about this exact thing two days ago! It takes is a weird word. I agree, subscriber is much more appropriate. You can suggest it to WordPress. They might actually listen!
